Mattes

In this scene, the flashlight required mattes so that it could look to glow. Back in olden times (before computers), tricks were needed to give the effect of light sources that glow brightly.

In order to achieve this, the area where the light was to be would be covered with a matte, blocking out everything but the glowing area, and then over-exposing the unmatted areas, giving the illusion of a glowing light source.

By over-exposing the area, it would give the light source the white of the exposure, plus the soft glowing edges, simulating a real light source. This mean the flashlight had to be matted like any other animated character so that the area of exposure could follow the light. And there you have it, pre-computer special effects!
