‘Cosmic Christmas’ Good Bet To Make Holiday Rerun List

Each year, amidst the reruns of the Charlie Brown Christmas Show, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty The Snowman, one or two new holiday specials for the kids turn up hoping to get on the list of perennial favorites.

This season one of the most delightful is a syndicated half-hour that takes no chances finding a peg for pint-sized viewer fascination. “Cosmic Christmas” airing at 7:30 tonight on Channel 4, is not only a Christmas show, it is animation and – here’s the unusual part – it is science fiction.

(There are some who say any story involving a Santa Claus who flies through the air in a sleigh drawn by reindeer is science fiction, but what do they know?)

At any rate, “Cosmic Christmas” is all about a little boy named Peter, his per goose Lucy, and a trio of beings from outer space who’ve decided to track down the meaning of the star of Bethlehem they heard was a bit bright some 2,000 years ago.

While Peter’s trying, mostly in vain, to show them some evidence of the Christmas spirit here on earth, their mascot, somewhat in the style of “Star Wars” R2D2, is cavorting around with Lucy.

It’s all very cute with a bit of a message thrown in. Price tag on the show was $270,000, extremely high for a syndicated half-hour. Expensive doesn’t always equate with good, but this time out it proves to equal good fun for the kids.
