“On the other hand, there is a half-hour Christmas cartoon on KSD-TV at 6:30 tonight, pre-empting “Newsbeat/Offbeat,” that might be the best new Yuletide show of this season. It’s called “A Cosmic Christmas,” and it is as wacky and warm as a Christmas special should be.
Three visitors from a distant planet arrive on Christmas Eve (without a “woo-eeee-ooo” sound), unaware that it is a special occasion, but anxious to learn what the holiday is all about. A small boy named Peter who has a large goose named Lucy tries to show them.
As they view the commercialism and greed of much of the celebration the visitors keep asking, “Is this Christmas?” and their young guide is chagrined. There is an opportunity for some of the love associated with the season to make itself evident, of course, and the telling of the tale becomes a charming television experience.
“A Cosmic Christmas” was produced in Canada by a group who have contributed to other high-quality children’s programs such as “Inside Out” and “Sesame Street.” The animation is beautifully detailed and the artistic effects are imaginative.
