“Another rare but adorable classic children’s special is 1977’s A Cosmic Christmas, an animated tale with a distinctive, stylized character design. Here, Peter and his pet goose Lucy wander the busy downtown streets at Christmas time. While looking at a crèche in a store’s window display, Peter sees the reflection of a moving light in the sky, and believes he’s seen a UFO. Later, walking in the woods, Peter meets three aliens from the spaceship who have come to investigate the 2000-year-old Star of Bethlehem. Peter tries to explain the meaning of Christmas to the visitors but struggles to show them examples in the city of the love, peace, generosity and good will as he described them. That is, until Peter falls through the ice, pursuing the hungry teen who stole his pet goose. The city folk gather to pull Peter out of the frozen pond and with the understanding of the visiting spacemen, come to see that Christmas is about people coming together to help one another. As the visitors from space fly away, they leave behind a beautiful night display of an angel in the sky.”
“In The Star Wars Holiday Special, the animated segment that Lumpy watches on his viewer – the same that introduces the bounty hunter, Boba Fett – was produced by the Canadian animation studio, Nelvana, which has since grown into one of the largest animation producers in the world. They are also responsible for creating A Cosmic Christmas.”
